Tolerance in “To Kill a Mockingbird”

In this book we have been focusing on the theme tolerance which is accepting someone for who they are. Tolerance is really important now days, because there are many different types of humans that we need to accept. Scout, Mrs. Dubose, and our choice, Tom Robinson were the examples we used to talk about the theme of tolerance. There were many other characters to use, but we decided to use the more focused on.
The author used Scout as an unreliable little girl to be the narrator. Scout would see situations in different point of views from the elderly people. She would take things to the extreme. Scout wanted to grow up too fast, because she thought she could solve problems from people older than her. For example, at the beginning of the story she was afraid of Boo Radley, because of all the roomers she was hearing about him. Then at the end when she finally meets him, she takes him by the hand and sits with him on her porch. After that she forgets about all the things she had heard.
The person who also emphasizes the theme of tolerance in the story is Mrs. Dubose. She is the average everyday little, old, crazy lady from next door. When you first meet Mrs. Dubose she seems to be very rude with anyone, but once you would compliment her, she would calm down but not to be courteous towards the compliment given. When you first meet her in the book, she is sitting out on her porch and Jem, Scout, and Dill are walking by. When Scout tries to be nice By saying hi, Mrs. Dubose replies,” Don’t say to me, you say hello you ugly girl!” That clearly shows she is not tolerant to people, but that does not mean she cannot be tolerant towards death. Mrs. Dubose had been diagnosed with cancer, but she refused to take any pain killing medicine, because she felt if she took those pills then she would be dying impurely. So she had to learn how to be tolerant of all that pain she had to go through so she would not be tempted to take the pain medicine.
One last example of tolerance was shown through a small portion of the book was shown through Tom Robinson. He was sadly charge of beating and raping Mayella Ewell. Even though you could clearly see that she was lieing Tom Robinson still did not say any mean or dishonest things about Mayella and her father. When he had to testify he actually said, "He felt bad for her." If you feel bad for someone you wouldn't rape them and Tom Robinson did not rape her at all. He was tolerant enough not to lose his composure when his life was at stake and still tolerated people who sat in front of and blatantly.
Scout, Mrs.Dubose and Tom Robinson were good examples of showing the theme tolerance. Tolerance will always be very important here on earth. We learned a lot from this book. We learned how to accept people for their differences. We hope for anyone else that read this book learned something too.
